About this role
We're hiring a Bilingual Community Organizer to work directly with Spanish-speaking hospitality workers — connecting them to resources, support, and collective power to improve conditions and build community.
You'll play a key role in Shift Change — a bilingual platform built with the CHAAD Project and Workit Labs — where workers can safely report harassment, wage theft, and discrimination, connect with support, and turn whisper networks into real organizing power.
You've run at least one organizing campaign and are ready to deepen work at the intersection of labor rights and survivor justice.
Key responsibilities
- Practice SK's trauma-informed organizing model with hospitality workers
- Support survivors and workers in sharing their stories and stepping into leadership as stewards
- Track and respond to Shift Change reports, especially from Spanish-speaking workers
- Develop a system-wide power map of Chicago's hospitality industry
- Provide Spanish/English translation as needed
- Strengthen the Solidarity Bench — build relationships with legal, organizing, and mutual aid partners
- Conduct intakes and triage — assess needs, identify key issues, and support action plans
- Develop organizing communications using Canva, GiveButter, and newsletters
- Facilitate Solidarity Circles for Spanish-speaking workers (training provided)
- Collaborate with team and partners to align strategy and move collective work forward
Skills and background
- 2–3+ years organizing experience with at least one campaign
- Bilingual — Spanish/English, strong verbal skills; written fluency a plus
- Trauma-informed mindset — brings care, discretion, and willingness to learn
- Proficiency in Canva, Excel, and GiveButter or similar platforms
- Familiarity with the hospitality industry (not required, but highly valued)
- Self-directed and collaborative — works independently and stays coordinated with a team
- Leadership experience — has supervised or coached organizers
- Strong relationship-builder, especially with women of color and folks navigating poverty
- Organized and reliable — manages time, priorities, and information effectively
- Creative and flexible — problem-solves in real time and adapts as needed
What else you should know
You'll join a small, dedicated team — and play a key role in building it. This role is largely self-directed, but you won't be doing it alone: you'll have strong support, guidance, and collaboration from team members and community allies.
As a newly designated nonprofit, this is currently an independent contractor (1099) role. The monthly rate includes a $500 stipend to help cover outside benefits and self-employment costs. We are working toward offering traditional W-2 roles in the future.
